Rolex GMT-Master Root Beer - The Luxury Hut

Since the 1950s, the Rolex GMT-Master has been a famous pilot watch collection, handsome and practical. However, Rolex introduced the first GMT-Master Rolesor watch as the Reference 16753. Now:

The Rolex GMT-Master Reference 16753 had two versions – one flaunting a black dial paired with black bezel and another featuring a brown dial and a brown-and-gold bezel. And the Reference 16753 with this brown-and-gold bezel was the ever-first GMT-Master Root Beer. Continue reading to explore more.

The First Rolex GMT-Master Root Beer 1675/3

Rolex had produced several solid gold versions of the GMT-Master featuring brown dials and brown inserts. And some collectors referred all-brown bezels as ‘Root Beer’ bezels. However, the Reference 1675/3 was originally the first GMT-Master to feature the bi-toned brown-and-gold bezel, marking the Root Beer GMT's beginning.

  • The Rolex GMT-Master 1675/3 comes with a brown dial and gold hour markers in a shape that acquired the nickname ‘nipple dial’.
  • Lastly, Rolex paired this brown-and-gold Root Beer GMT-Master with either a Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.
  • Rolex enthusiasts fell in love with this timepiece because the ‘Root Beer’ bezel is pretty reminiscent of the famous Root Beer soda drink.

Interestingly, the watch gained new monikers such as ‘Tiger Eye’ suddenly, perhaps to make the name sound trendier. Later, while Clint Eastwood owned this GMT-Master Root Beer, the watch became popularly known as the ‘Clint Eastwood’.

Well, you will today hardly find these earliest versions of the Root Beer GMT-Master. However, the GMT-Master Reference 1675 enjoyed a long production run. But Rolex produced the Reference 1675/3 for a shorter period in limited numbers. The Rolex GMT-Master Root Beer has significantly appreciated in current years. And it is likely to get harder to find and more expensive in the upcoming years.

The Second Generation GMT-Master II 16713

Rolex introduced the ever-first GMT-Master II in the mid-1980s. The upgraded features in this generation of GMT series include a new GMT movement that enables wearers to adjust the 12-hour and 24-hour hands independently.

Rolex unleashed a new bi-tone black-and-red ‘COKE’ bezel within the first generation of the GMT-Master II. However, the brand reintroduced the popular Root Beer model during the second generation of the GMT-Master II.

  • While the Coke and Pepsi models were available only in stainless steel, Rolex offered the brown-and-gold Root Beer bezel in dual-tone mode.
  • On the other hand, the brand fitted all solid 18ct yellow gold versions with all-brown bezel insert featuring matching brown dials.
  • So the GMT-Master Root Beer Reference 16713 featured sapphire crystal and new movement.
  • However, the brown dials of the Reference 16713 flaunted applied hour markers with yellow gold surrounds – this design is very similar to those you will find in modern Rolex watches.

It is comparatively a small feature. But historically, the gold and two-tone Rolex GMT watches had nipple dials. Thus, the GMT-Master Root Beer 16713 indicated a visible aesthetic departure from its previous sibling.

Rolex continued to produce the Reference 16713 from the 1990s to early 2000s. In 2006, the watchmaker stopped its production, leaving people to conjecture whether this exclusive model would come back to the collection.
