Rolex Datejust vs Rolex Submariner

Rolex, the leading luxury watch manufacturer, has numerous iconic watches in its catalogue. However, among these, the Datejust and the Submariner are perhaps the most popular Rolex timepieces of all time.

Both the models enjoy equal hierarchy in status and set the standard for their respective class. Undoubtedly, the Datejust and the Submariner are among the most popular and coveted Rolex watches. But both of them are very different.

So let’s here explore the differences between the two iconic models – the Datejust and the Submariner.

Rolex Datejust vs Rolex Submariner

Rolex created the Submariner as a professional diver watch. On the contrary, the Datejust was introduced as a robust and durable timepiece for regular use.

As a purposedly-designed underwater watch, the Submariner comes with many added design components that fulfil the requirements of scuba divers. The features are like a rotatable timing bezel, higher water-resistant ability, a wetsuit extension system in the clasp and a highly luminescent display.

On the contrary, Rolex did not build the Datejust with any particular sport or lifestyle in mind. The watch comes with a versatile style that can accompany you in both casual and formal situations.

The Datejust is available in a wide range of materials, sizes and configuration. There is basically a Datejust for all personalities and lifestyles.

Features & Functionality: Differences

When it comes to design, functionality and features, the Datejust and the Submariner have some significant differences between them. And this is obvious as they were devised for different uses.

The Rolex Submariner is more water-resistant than the Rolex Datejust. It is an obvious requirement as the brand built the Submariner for underwater use.

  • However, the contemporary Datejust versions can reach up to a depth of 330ft (100m).
  • It is enough for any aquatic instances people often encounter in daily life.
  • But the Submariner offers water-resistance up to a depth of 300m (1,000ft) – three times more than the Datejust.

Additionally, every Rolex Datejust model is available with a date display at the 3 o’clock side on the dial. However, Rolex offers both no-date and date-display versions of Submariner.

Moreover, there are substantial differences in the bezels of the Datejust and the Submariner in terms of functionality and design.

  • The bezel on Rolex Datejust is entirely decorative. It comes in a few different styles and is fixed.
  • On the other hand, the modern Submariner watches feature a unidirectional rotating Cerachrom bezel with a 60-minute scale engraved on it.
  • It can be used as a basic timer to track events up to an hour, thereby enabling the scuba divers to track decompression stops or bottom time underwater.

However, Rolex equipped both the Datejust and the Submariner with extension systems in bracelet clasps. But the Glidelock extension system on the Submariner watches allow the bracelet to adjust in 2mm increments without using tools up to a total of 20mm.

On the contrary, the Datejust features the Easylink extension that enables the bracelet to contract or expand by 5mm with no use of tools.

However, different extension systems were used in the bracelets because of the different intended purposes of the two models. The Datejust needs adjustment to fit around a swelled or shrinking wrist. On the other hand, keeping the primary intent of the Submariner in mind, users will need to adjust the bracelet to fit over a thick wetsuit’s sleeve.
